Finding The Perfect Apartment To Rent

5

Whether you’re about to live on your own for the first time or going from a mortgage to a rental, being informed about what to look for when renting an apartment is important. Finding the right place at the right price can be daunting... so here is part one of a two part post with great tips to make the search easier.

Landlord’s Reputation

When looking for an apartment to call home, check out the reputation of the landlord or property management company you’re considering. Do they have a website? If so does it look professional, credible and well maintained? Is the information provided clear, concise and relevant? Is it easy to connect with a contact person? Do they have a customer service department who will answer your questions?

These questions are significant because they're great indicators of what you can expect down the road. Reputable landlords and property managers provide information freely. They are easily accessible. Many have comprehensive websites so you can start your search on line - which means less time wasted. A good landlord is worth the effort so investigate online and reap the benefits.

Transportation

If you’re without a vehicle and use public transportation, check the location of the apartment carefully in terms of accessibility to transportation amenities.  An apartment may be well-priced and in a good neighborhood, but if you have to spend most of your time calling taxis or walking long distances, it might not be as attractive as you think.

Look to be close to major roadways, transit or trains. Can you walk to amenities like a shopping centre if needed? Doing your due diligence ahead of time will save you time and money.

Convenience

Choosing an apartment that is conveniently located near major amenities and urban comforts can make your life a lot simpler. Opt for a place that’s close to shopping, parks, public libraries, recreational centres, farmer’s markets, restaurants, cafe’s and other conveniences will make your new apartment home that much more enjoyable.

Location, location, location. An amenity rich location will give you access to arts, culture, sports and other exciting activities. If you yearn for convenience, a location next to ample amenities should be at the top of your list.
